07 Oct Fall in Love With These Irresistible Comfort Foods
Fall is here, and with it the wonderful return of comfort foods.
Comfort foods are pure joy to see, smell, and share with our family and friends. As the weather turns colder, we long for the intoxicating aromas of baked lasagne, pot roast, chili, and soup wafting through our homes.
The best part about many of the dishes listed below is that they can be prepared ahead of time or placed in a slow cooker to simmer throughout the day. Serve with warm bread, biscuits, or cornbread and a salad.
Soups/Stews–The perfect way to enjoy Fall produce! It’s easy to prepare homemade soups and stews in your slow cooker. Place your meat, vegetables, and seasonings in the crock and set the controls to low. The time you spend preparing this in the morning is well worth it when you get home at the end of the day and dinner is ready. If you are going to be home while your soup or stew is cooking, simply place your ingredients in a large, heavy-bottomed pot and simmer all day long. Casseroles–Make-ahead and bake in the oven. Casseroles have everything all in one dish. Place meat, vegetables, and spices in a large casserole pan. Cover and keep in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake. Try chicken pot pie, macaroni and cheese, turkey tetrazzini, and Texas-style enchilada casserole.
Pasta–What could be easier than boiling water? Cook and drain the pasta, then add your favorite sauce, fresh herbs, meat, and veggies. Top with grated cheese and serve with fresh bread and salad. 15 Pasta Recipes to Make This Fall
Applesauce–Fresh, homemade applesauce is so easy to make. First, buy some fresh North Carolina apples, including: Red Delicious, Rome Beauty, Golden Delicious, Stayman, Granny Smith, Gala, Jonagold, Gingergold, Fuji, Crispin/Mutsu, Goldrush, Honeycrisp, Empire, and Pink Lady. Next, peel and core apples. Place apples in a large pot, add some water, and cook down to the desired consistency. The more you cook it, the less lumps there will be. You may add cinnamon or sugar if you like, but it is delicious completely natural!
