Make 2016 Your Home’s Best Year Ever!

Make 2016 Your Home’s Best Year Ever!

Happy New Year from Carolina Carpet One!

It’s a new year, and a great time to make some improvements to your home.

Most of the ideas listed below are easy, inexpensive, and important resolutions that will benefit your home and family. Make the commitment to making your home clean, organized, beautiful, energy-efficient, and safe for 2016 and beyond.

Be Safe–Protect the most valuable part of your home–those living inside it! Install smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and check batteries regularly; rehearse fire safety rules and create/practice an escape plan with your family; clean the lint trap in your dryer; lock up firearms and prescription medications.

Save Energy–Make energy saving a habit in 2016. Turn off lights when you leave a room; replace incandescent bulbs with CFLs (see the Energy Star Choose a Light Guide); install programmable thermostats; and clean or replace the air filter in your heating/cooling system. See Duke Energy’s Winter Energy Saving Tips.

Conserve Water–Install low-flow shower heads and low-flush toilets; run the dishwasher/washing machine only when full; fix leaks. To learn more, visit the Environmental Protection Agency’s Conserving Water page.

Make a Statement With New Flooring–Consider installing new flooring in your home. Carpet, hardwoods, tile/stone, and laminate will improve the beauty, function, and value of your home.

Recycle–This is another great resolution that should involve the whole family. Once you get in the habit, it’s easy to maintain. See Recycling Basics for the Home.

Declutter–This is a group endeavor, so get the whole family in on this one. Clearing clutter from your home allows you to focus on the things that really matter. Toss, donate, or sell items that you don’t want or need. This gives you space in your home for the things that are most important. Work on one room at a time to avoid becoming overwhelmed.

Organize–Once the extra “stuff” is eliminated, it’s time to get organized. Make the most out of every available storage space in your home. Use shelves and hooks to maximize wall space without using precious floor space. Utilize bins and baskets to corral loose items in your home. Group like items together so they are easy to find. Once you’ve designated a specific home for an item, be sure to return it to its home every time (and train the other members of your household to do the same).

Try Green Cleaning–Say goodbye to harsh chemicals. Natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, lemons, and hydrogen peroxide will effectively clean and disinfect your home without compromising the health of your family or the environment.

Purify Your Indoor Air–Did you know that plants are a beautiful, natural, and inexpensive way to clean your home’s indoor air? Aloe, spider plant, golden pothos, and chrysanthemum will help to remove benzene, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide in your home. Read 15 Houseplants for Improving Indoor Air Quality.

Finish Your To-Do List–Why not complete some home improvement projects this winter? There are many inexpensive upgrades you can make to your home that will have a huge impact on your home’s beauty, value, and function.

Add Some Color to Your Home–Tired of the colors (or lack or color) in your home? It’s a new year and a great time to change things up. Check out Behr’s 2016 Color Trends.
